What do we all think of this one? Dedicated servers? Comparison to BF2? CoD 5? CoD4?

To early to tell yet mate.

Playing the game it's a challenge on it's on right at the moment:
  • Slow poke server browser
  • random crashes (game just 'disappears' for me now and then)
  • odd punkbuster kicks
  • Master server shuts down
  • etc.
Here a small read up of the official disconnect announcement...
EA Server and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Disconnect Status
(follow the forum links if ya want more info; but beware a lot of gamer tears were shed over this game the last few days.)
Ninja Edit: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Server Update (2010-03-07)

Just that they have dedicated servers ain't nothing to impress me. Up to MW2 that was standard (as it should be for competitive FPS games). It comes more or less down to the server browser and EA and DICE don't have the best reputation of taking care of that. I still have to see a number in the ping column lol (Ninja EDIT: Quick fix on Win7: Run the program as System Admin will solve this issue for now)

But the good news is, like Stormcrow said, that the game promises good fun once you get it working. I say give it another month or two (well maybe six ... it's EA in the end) and we'll see how the game actually plays like. And how many bugs/ cheats we face in comparison to quality gaming time.

I at least still got hope for some fun gaming hours with my lads before christmas.

My biggest bone to pick with this one is probably the fact that it has vehicles. I HATE tanks and choppers and all that shit. When I go a-shootin', it should just be me, you, and a GUN. :shootin:

Besides, I just bought MW2, and the poor student in me can't afford another 70 bucks on a game. Think of how much booze that is! :lmao:

I gotta say... I'm really enjoying this game...

Now, of course, this essay is based on the Multiplayer component

I'm finding that I don't have as much fun when i just hop on to play by myself... but i've had the good fortune of being invited along with Shibby and the AMD guys and let me tell you, the squad based matchup makes it really shine.

So for instance... Team Deathmatch... there's 2 teams, but inside those two teams there are 4 man squads... join a squad with your buddies and you can really put some fun times down... spread your party out for what you want to accomplish (take medics to heal the soldiers and soldiers can resupply ammo) and you'll have some good success....

The destructible environments are very fun, because now I can RPG you even if you're standing on the other side of a wall... because I just blew up that wall, and you got killed in the explosion...

The game takes into consideration things that CoD does not... like for you snipers out there... you now have to compensate for gravity on your shots... so aim above their head for headshots... lead the target if they're running, etc... I'm not too keen on the sniper class in this game, because theres some skill involved there instead of my style of randomly running around spraying bullets in every direction... but if you can get past the learning curve of aiming your shots, and can pull off headshots, you might enjoy it... the maps are great for those people that can snipe... it's much easier to hide in this game than in CoD...

Now, it's not all peaches and cream... the items Tim listed have creeped up on me as well, and starting off with any class seems to suck across the board... and when you first pick it up it seems like it's gonna be 17 forevers before you level up... but once you unlock your class's ability (ammo packs for soldiers, health kits for medics, repair/destructo tools for engineers) then you'll finally be able to start getting some good xp... but i gotta tell you... the first gun you get on the assault class SUCKS MONKEYS.... but when you unlock the next one, you'll never have to feel that pain again... Another note, is controls felt a little wonky at first, but probably only because I'm used to CoD.

hop on and game with the AMD guys, and you can ride their coat tails to some victories. |m|

The game has "challenges" kinda like CoD but the good thing is you can complete them over and over... so say there's a challenge that gives you 200xp for killing 5 people in a round with a grenade, you can do that every time you play a new round.... there's lots of them that are tough for you completionists that want to be challenged...

So anyway...to those of you that are on the fence about this one, it officially gets the Stormcrow Seal of Approval.

I agree with ya, the game has a lot potential especially because of the emphasize it places on team play.
I enjoyed the few hours I was able to play it.

But I have to reinforce a warning here: The game is far from perfect (yet) and might not be for everybody.
A few things that might help you on deciding whether to purchase or not:

  • The game relies heavily on processing, reasonable FPS require quadcore (or great overclocking skills);
  • 512MB graphics memory is on the low side;
  • The game has a poor netcode (caching) laying heavy load on servers which results in high pings on even relatively close servers (aka don't dream about cross-continent games at this moment);
  • Master server issues with a lot of disconnects plague the game for over a week now making it barely playable on peak hours;
  • Rather long bug/ improvements list, a typical EA game pushed out way to early even after BETA testing;
  • Weapon/ class balancing is not (yet) achieved

Ninja EDIT: There is an overviews about some quick fixes and a QA update on their Blog: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Q&A - 15 mar 2010

Don't get me wrong, this game can provide some fun gaming time especially with a bunch of friends ... awesome. But we have to see how much time and effort they'll put into it to polish it before it gets my thumps up.

Ben-a-boo, I love your analysis and trust it more than any game review site! I'm definitely going to hold of this game for a while!

Sure that game is a mess, buggy as it is ... BUT some of those are source of pure joy ...
(P.s. crank up the resolution)

(P.p.s. Probably should have posted it in the ROFLMAO thread)
