Some people leave the computer on all the time, and some don't. What do you guys think/do?

I always turn it off unless i am downloading something, saves energy which is good.

Talking about energy i was really stunned by the fact how much energy is being wasted in teh us, i was in a bar where they had over 25 tv's running all the time, talking about a waste of energy.

US does so many things wrong, lol

Ive heard that a PC on all the time is a better energy saver then turning it on/off all the time cuz of the spike of energy it uses to start/stop.

This certainly is true for neon lamps in a small window of time but for computer's?
I don't think so lol, produces to much heat while running (there is a reason these things have a build-in fan hehehe) ... if you wanna leave it on, make sure it's set to hibernate (or at least sleep) modus. Or just turn it off if you don't use it. It's also good for your computer btw.

my PC currently sleeps after like 10-15 mins or something like that i think.

this article looks old but sounds correct
http://www.pcguide.com/care/care/gen/powerOnOff-c.html

basically turn it off or sleep it

Thanks! That was just what I was looking for. A reasonably informed explanation of both sides of the story.

Always close my laptop whenever I am not using it (sleep mode). My computer at home used to get turned off at night, but now my dad runs a webserver off of it so it is on 24/7. (It kills me to see a $300 graphics card and 24' monitor being used to run a WEB SERVER! >:0 )

You can't hack into a computer that isn't turned on. (Ok, you can, but it's harder)

I used to leave my stuff on, but these days, if I'm not on it, it's off. It's the wild west out there, and every roadblock you throw up makes it just a little bit harder for your box to be borged into a botnet.
